Considered one of the most beautiful villages in the historical region of Maramureş, Poienile Izei impresses with its fairytale-like sceneries, old traditions and its unique wooden church which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Built in 1632, the church of Saint Parascheva is a classic example of Maramureşean architecture with its double roof, a tower with three bells and two level windows.

The church’s heritage is very rich and it includes collections of old books and wooden painted icons. What makes it real special are its paintings which are well preserved and depict various Biblical scenes. If you are here don't hesitate to take a stroll through the village, to discover the traditional houses and the Jewish cemetery.

If you love nature, the nearby hills surrounding Ţibleş Mountains will allure you to go hiking and cycling.

Under the cross from the top of the spire you can see a crescent which it is said it has protected the church against the Tatar assault in 1717.

Conservation facts

The church is listed along with seven other churches from Maramureş on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The paintings dating back to the year 1794 are in a good state of preservation and the church is considered to be one of the most well preserved churches in Maramureş.
