Ponicova Cave

The Ponicova Cave is located near Dubova village, Mehedinţi County.

It can be accessed from the land or by boat, from the Danube. The cave can be visited all year round, the best time being from May to October. It is required to wear proper gear (rubber boots, helmet, flashlight or headlamp).

Ponicova Cave or the Bats Cave is found in the Iron Gates Natural Park, deep in the Ciucaru Mare Massif. It is the largest cave from the Danube Gorge.

It is formed out of several galleries with a total length of 1 660 m, with the main gallery being 400 m long. The most spectacular part is the Columns Chamber  where many stalactites, stalagmites and columns adorn the chamber. Two large openings illuminate the cave so much which emphasizes its greatness.

Did you know?

Ponicova Cave is also known as the Kings’ Snake Cave due to its many karst formations in shape of a snake.

Conservation facts

Ponicova Cave is a speleological reserve. Many bear and hyena fossils were discovered here but also some fossils belonging to endemic species.
