Discover

The Trikule Fortress watches over the Danube Gorge for the past 600 years as it was built as a defense against the Ottomans. The fortress’ three towers are placed in a triangle shape with its base on of Danube’s bank. Two of three towers still have their original height of 10 m. Due to the Iron Gates dam, that was built in the 1960’s, the Trikule Fortress was flooded and now only two of its towers can be seen.

Did you know?

The World Geography included the Trikule Fortress in a top of one the most spectacular ruins covered by water.

Conservation facts

The towers of the fortress have suffered damage over time caused by treasure hunters or from the erosion from the Danube.

Now only two of its towers are relatively well preserved while the third one was ruined by the ice blocks formed on the Danube in the winter of 1924.
