A true landmark of Oradea is the Moon Church from Unirii Square. Built from 1784 to 1832 in the late Baroque Style and softened with Classical elements, the Moon Church impresses with its steeple of 55 m in height where the famous moon can be admired.

Amidst the outstanding interior murals in the church you can also discover the portrait of Horea, ruler of the rebellion which started in Transylvania in 1784. In the churchyard you can also visit the Roman Ciorogariu Museum where you can admire an exhibition of various church artifacts.

Did you know?

The name of the church is inspired by a mechanism which is unique in Europe. On top of the church sits a  half black, half golden globe. As it spins, it shows the different moon phases.

Conservation facts

In 2004 the Moon Church was included on the historical monuments list.
