Built in 1532 during Petru Rareş rule, the fortified monastery of Moldoviţei falls into the authentic Moldavian style combining Gothic and Byzantine elements. Through the priceless aesthetic value given by the exterior frescoes, Moldoviţa Monastery was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. What makes it even more unique is its open porch with five painted arches that delight the eyes. In church’s museum, you can admire old icons, and hundreds year old furniture such as the king's seat.

Did you know?

The first church of Moldoviţa was built at the beginning of the 14th century which collapsed 100 years later due to a landslide. Its ruins can still be visited today as they are found 500 m from the present church.

Conservation facts

The Moldoviţa Monastery was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as well as seven other churches from Bukovina (Humor, Suceviţa, Arbore, Probota, Pătrăuţi, Voroneţ, St John the New Monastery in Suceava).
