The Holy Friday Church


The Holy Friday Church is found at the National Princely Court Museum Complex in Târgovişte, Dâmboviţa County.

The church is open to the public only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The entrance ticket is valid for all the attractions of the National Princely Court Museum Complex.

Beyond the thick walls of the Princely Court in Târgovişte, you will find the Holy Friday Church, considered to be one of the oldest churches in Wallachia.

Many of the church's elements of the early architecture can still be admired today. Although it dates back to the mid-fifteenth century, the church has kept its architectural beauty and continues to receive people for prayers.

Around the church you will see numerous stone-carved crosses, while the church shelters some tombs belonging to historical figures with beautifully decorated gravestones. The church also hosts interesting exhibits of old icons.

Conservation facts

In 2007 the church's belfry was greatly affected by a lightning bolt during a storm, thus destroying it almost completely. Following the complex rehabilitation work which were carried out in 2013, the church returned to the original state.

The historical monument became once more one of the symbols of the National Princely Court Museum Complex in Târgovişte.
