St. Michael's Roman-Catholic Church in Cluj-Napoca is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city and the second largest Gothic church in Transylvania. The monumental construction of the historic center dates back to the 14th century, when the old chapel was transformed into the imposing church that stands today. The church impresses through the frescoes painted in 15th century on the southern wall, on the right of the entrance, the baroque pulpit decorated with wooden sculptures and bas-reliefs, the original baroque pipe organ from 1753 and the massive 80 meter high bell-tower of conical shape (one of the highest church towers in Romania). In 1902 in front of the church to the south, an impressive monument represented by the equestrian statue of Matei Corvin was placed, considered to be one of Hungary’s greatest kings.

Did you know?

Between the northern side of the chapel and the main church's wall there is a spiral staircase, the so-called "royal ladder", which two people can climb and descend at the same time without meeting.
